Description
Lower Rill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century, including the addition of a porch featuring a datestone from 1704 and the initials R Y N. The building is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar end quoins and red brick dressings. It has a modern tiled roof that is hipped at one end and gabled at the other, along with a modern brick chimneystack on the ridge line that has a 17th-century core.
The farmhouse is a two-storey lobby entrance house with four windows and irregular fenestration. There are three modern three-light dormers, while the remaining windows are 19th-century casements set in 18th-century brick surrounds. The porch is centrally located and gabled, featuring the datestone. On the right side elevation, there is one blocked first-floor mullioned window with 18th-century brickwork, and a similarly blocked small square stone mullion window in the attic. The rear elevation also has blocked mullioned windows and a doorcase. Inside, there is a 17th-century spine beam with four-inch chamfers and blocked-in open fireplaces.
