Description

A probable late 17th to early 18th century farmhouse, it was later converted into cottages and the roof was heightened and slated in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick on rubble foundations, with a slate roof and two chimneystacks. There are five cambered headed casement windows. Later outshuts extend to the rear. Nos. 5 and 5A have gabled weatherporches, and No. 5 retains an 18th century six-panelled door. Inside No. 5, an early 18th century plain wooden lintel is above an open fireplace, alongside some 18th century plank panelling, a four-panelled door, and a fine early 18th century built-in wooden corner china cupboard with a domed head, shaved shelves and six fielded panels to the doors. No. 5A contains a central chamfered beam and a cupboard to the right of the fireplace with 18th century L-shaped iron hinges. Some of the first-floor floorboards are reused 16th or 17th century timber, and one is marked with the carpenter's mark "VIIII". No. 7, believed to have been a stockman’s cottage, has an interior domed bread oven. No. 5 previously functioned as a dairy serving the village in the end room within living memory. The building is included on the list for its interior features.
