Description

Berwick Lodge is a large house dating from the mid-19th century, built in a free Gothic style. It is constructed from stone rubble with ashlar quoins, and has a gable-ended slate roof. The north front has two gabled bays, embellished with fleur de lis finials, saddle stones, and kneelers. A square tower is located at the west end, featuring stepped crenellation. The attic windows are casements with lozenge glazing bars. Superimposed bay windows of three lights, with sash windows, are present to the east of the north front. A first-floor oriel window is situated to the west, with other windows featuring recessed casements and plate glass, the corners of which have been shaped to mimic the glazing bar pattern. Rusticated surrounds are found on the windows. Niches flank the ground floor window below the oriel, and the basement contains four casements. A flight of steps leads to a doorway with a four-centred moulded arch. The south front is similar to the north, with matching gabled bays. It has four casement windows, mostly with lozenge glazing bars. A five-light bay window, featuring a heavy concave cornice and weather-boarded aprons, is present to the east. A four-centred arched doorway, with a flight of steps in an angle of the tower, is also featured.
