Description
New Barn Cottage is a 17th-century cottage constructed with a timber frame and painted red brick infill set on a stone plinth. It features a thatched roof that is half-hipped on one side, along with an end brick chimneystack. The cottage has one storey and attics, with two windows. The framing consists of square panels, some of which include diagonal tension braces. There are two 20th-century casement windows and a 20th-century plank door. Lean-to extensions added to the right and left are not of special interest.
Inside, the cottage has a chamfered spine beam and a wooden bressumer above the open fireplace. There is a late 18th-century or early 19th-century winder stair. One doorway features beams with run-out stops. Although the roof is partially concealed, it appears to be of the through purlin type, and the tie beam is reused, showing evidence of earlier slot holes. There are also traces of wattle and daub infill.
