Description
Hill Farm Cottage is a house with a complex history, situated in Gatcombe. The building comprises two distinct phases of construction: the right-hand portion dating to the mid-17th century and subsequently refronted in the 18th century, while the left-hand portion was built in the 18th century. The right-hand section is constructed of coursed Isle of Wight green sand rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and red brick dressings, whereas the left-hand section is built of red brick in English bond. The roof is thatched, with a half-hipped design to the right side and a full hipped design to the left side, and incorporates two brick chimney stacks along the ridge.
The cottage is one and a half storeys in height, featuring a two-bay, four-window facade. A prominent eyebrow dormer contains two 19th-century triple casement windows. The ground floor windows are also 19th-century casements. A thatched porch, supported by wooden posts, is situated on the right-hand side. The rear elevation exhibits a deep plinth, with the end bay constructed of stone and then brick in English bond. A lean-to addition with a slate roof is also present.
The parlour, located within the right-hand section, retains a spine beam with 2 inch chamfers, terminated by an ovolo stopped by a tongue stop. The former kitchen, situated on the extreme left, contains an arched, dome-shaped bread oven, a wooden chamfered beam above, and a flagstone floor. The roof structure includes principal rafters and clasped purlins. The presence of four bread ovens indicates the building likely functioned as the parish bake house at one point.
