Description
The remains of the obelisk to Appuldurcombe are located on Appuldurcombe Road and date back to 1774. The structure consists of a three-stepped plinth made of ashlar stone. This plinth is all that remains of a monument that originally featured a granite obelisk standing 70 feet high. The obelisk was erected by Sir Richard Worsley, the seventh Baronet of Appuldurcombe, in memory of his ancestor Sir Robert Worsley, who passed away on 20th July 1747. The obelisk was struck by lightning in 1831, leaving only the plinth intact.
