Description
4-10 Town Lane is a row of early 19th century houses, possibly built a bit earlier. The buildings consist of Nos 8 and 10, which are three storeys tall, while the others are two storeys. Nos 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10 are constructed of chequered brick with red brick dressings. No 5 is made of red brick, and No 8 features purple grey headers with red brick dressings. Nos 4 and 7 have old tile gable end roofs, while Nos 8, 9, and 10 have slate roofs; No 8 has a capped gable, and No 10 has a full hipped roof. Each house typically has one window, except Nos 7 and 10, which have two. Nos 4 and 5 have moulded flush wood frames, with No 5 featuring casements and glazing bars, while Nos 9 and 10 have later casements with segmental brick arches above. The other windows are recessed sashes with flat brick arches and block sills. No 8 retains an early shop front with a bow window, glazing bars, a frieze, and a cornice. Its door is recessed and has four fielded panels, with a doorcase featuring reeded pilasters and a bracketed frieze and cornice. No 10 has a ground floor that is a restaurant, and the other doorways are of a plain cottage type.
