Description
The ice house, located 230 metres west of Appuldurcombe House, dates from the late 18th century. It is an earth mound with a stone rubble revetment wall that covers a brick chamber and a stone vaulted entrance passage. The northwest entrance features a segmental-headed portal that provides access to a passage leading to a chamber that is 3.2 metres in diameter. This ice house is one of three garden buildings that remain from the former park of Appuldurcombe, which was designed by Capability Brown around 1781, alongside the Freemantle Lodge Gateway and the remains of an obelisk on Appuldurcombe Down.
