Description
Oaklea and Alverstone Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages, dating from the early 18th century. The front is built of red brick on a base of Isle of Wight stone rubble, while the rear elevation and the ground floor of the left end are also made of Isle of Wight stone rubble. The building features a tiled roof with an off-central square brick chimney stack. It stands two storeys high with attics and has five windows. The layout is rectangular, with two projecting outshuts at the rear. Most of the windows are 19th-century casements, and the ground floor windows have cambered head linings, although later casements have been inserted below these. A notable feature is the 18th-century brick gabled porch, which has a round-headed arch that incorporates a pair of wooden seats and a two-panelled door behind it. There is also one circular iron tie. Oaklea has a 19th-century outshut at the rear, while Alverstone Farmhouse has an 18th-century one. This site was one of the Domesday manors.
