Description

The barn at Chale Abbey is an early 16th-century structure that was restored in the 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof. The east front includes a large projecting hipped waggon entrance and three stone buttresses, while the west front also has three stone buttresses. The north end gable displays tumbling in and kneelers, along with two stone mullioned windows positioned near the apex, separated by a central buttress that has splayed buttresses on either side. There is a row of triangular ventilation slits and a deep plinth. The barn consists of seven bays and has an arch-braced roof supported by angled queen struts. Only one truss is original; the others have been replaced with softwood. The roof itself is a 19th-century design, diagonally boarded with seven layers of purlins and a ridgepiece. This barn is recognized as one of the oldest on the Isle of Wight.
