Description
The lychgate to the Church of St Blasius was built in 1894. It features an ashlar and rubble base with a timber-framed superstructure and a tiled roof. The stone base is approximately 5 feet high and slopes outward. In front, there are a pair of wooden gates with pierced carvings, elaborate iron brackets, and wooden seats at the rear. The structure has two bays, with the front displaying arched braces with cusping, a date in Roman numerals, and an embattled bressumer decorated with Tudor roses. The gable includes carved wooden bargeboards and an ornate painted metal clock face set in a pebbledashed surround. The rear features ogee bracing and an iron bell. An inscription notes that the lychgate was erected in memory of Francis White Popham, Lord of the Manor of Shanklin.
