Description
West Standen House is a house with its oldest part dating back to 1690, featuring the initials R C A. It has been altered and includes an L-shaped wing built around 1840. The exterior is stuccoed with a slate roof and brick chimneystacks. The house has two storeys and attics, with irregularly placed windows. The late 17th-century rear section has one dormer, a nine-paned sash window on the first floor, and a three-light sash window on the ground floor. The 1840 L wing primarily features twelve-paned sash windows, including a three-light canted bay with marginal glazing bars. At the angle of the wings, there is a Tuscan porch with pilasters. The rear elevation of the older wing is made of painted brick in English bond, and a 18th-century brewhouse is attached to it. Inside the older wing, there is a spine beam with two brick chamfers and an early 19th-century staircase with scrolled tread ends and a mahogany handrail. The kitchen includes a corner cupboard with serpentine shelves and fielded panelling. On the first floor, there is an entrance to the coachman's loft. The brewhouse features a wide fireplace with a bricked-in bread oven and a roof supported by angled queen struts and through purlins.
