Description

Lisle Combe is an early 19th-century large "cottage ornée" located on Undercliff Drive in St Lawrence. It is one of the early residences in the Undercliff area, set in spacious grounds below the road. The building is constructed of stone rubble with quoins and features an asymmetrical design. Notable architectural elements include numerous openwork bargeboard gables with finials, mullioned diamond leaded casements with drip moulds, and a two-storey gabled porch that has a small first-floor oriel and a four-centred arched entrance. The steep slate roofs are complemented by red brick Tudor-style chimneys and overhanging eaves.

The south garden front is asymmetrical, with a recessed section featuring two hipped bargeboard gables to the southwest. The center block has two gables over its outer bays, each with small oriels, and two gabled dormers at the center. A ground floor tiled roof verandah with a central gable enhances the façade. The wings of the building include rectangular part roof bay windows on the first floor, and a projecting right-hand gabled block features a broad break, similar diamond leaded casements, and marginal glazing. The west return of this block has an oriel bay window beneath its gable, contributing to the picturesque composition of the property. Lisle Combe is associated with the Yarborough family.
