Description

Terraced houses dating to circa 1825. Numbers 36-42 were likely designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustine Busby, although this is only confirmed for number 42.

The houses are stucco-faced, with white brick, and have roofs of Welsh slate (to numbers 36, 38-9, 41-2), asbestos slate (to number 37), and tiles (to number 40). The brickwork of number 42 has been painted. The houses are three storeys high, with a basement, and each has a two-window range. They feature full-height, full-width segmental bay windows. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed and in places have a scored finish to imitate ashlar. There is an altered round-arched entrance (now flat-arched on number 38), flanked by simple engaged Doric columns supporting a plain entablature; the columns are missing on numbers 36 and 42. All windows are flat-arched, with gauged brick heads to those on the first and second floors. Continuous bracketed balconies with cast-iron balustrades are present to the first-floor windows of numbers 36-39. Numbers 40-41 have individual, shallow, cast-iron balconies, while number 42 has a balcony supported by four panelled, tapering columns, with a cast-iron balustrade and a coved, scalloped awning. Original sash windows are retained in numbers 41 and 42. The houses have a cornice and blocking course, with stacks to the party walls. The interiors have not been inspected. Cast-iron railings with spearhead finials are present to the steps and garden fronts; these are probably largely renewed. Brick and cobble garden walls are located at numbers 39 and 41-42. Numbers 36-41 were initially listed on 20 August 1971.
