Description
The boundary walls to St Mary's Convent in Hove are of medieval origin, with subsequent repairs and alterations. They are constructed from coursed and random rubble flint pebbles, topped with cement coping. The wall runs continuously for about 220 meters, varying in height, and extends south and then east along Manor Road, north and then west, forming a boundary with the churchyard of St Nicholas, which is adjacent to the remains of the medieval manor house.
At the southern junction with High Street, there is a round-arched blocked entrance of uncertain date. Between the Convent of St Mary and the churchyard, there is a doorway featuring a moulded round-arched opening with a plank door, which was rebuilt in the mid to late 19th century. Next to this entrance, on the churchyard side, is a memorial to the Borrer family, who built the manor house that is now the convent. This memorial consists of an inset piece of medieval 2-light tracery, approximately 2 meters high, commemorating John Borrer, who died in 1866, and his last surviving daughter, who died in 1908.
In the center of the western stretch of the wall, there is a round-arched opening that leads to a subway beneath Manor Road, providing access to the gardens. These walls contribute to a significant group of structures surrounding the Church of St Nicolas.
