Description

The former malthouse and brewery, now used for light industrial purposes, dates from the mid 19th century. It is built of yellow stock bricks with red brick dressings and features a timber-clad projection. The roof is a bitumen-covered clay tile mansard with curved eaves, along with a pyramid roof and cowl on the malthouse, and a brick stack on the left gable end. The building has a plan that includes a malthouse with an adjoining range containing a cross gable and a projecting bay. It stands two storeys plus an attic and has a façade with one bay on the left and two bays on the right. The right side of the malthouse is lit by a five-light window, while the left projecting gable end has a three-light window. The timber cladding has fretted ends supported by struts set in concrete corbels, with two single-light windows below and two windows set apart to the right. The ground floor on the right features a large segmental-headed fixed light window, and on the left, there is a double door that is panelled and half-glazed, topped with a rectangular fanlight that has glazing bars. The left return is only lit at ground floor level by two small windows. This projection was used for dropping malted barley into carts below. It is believed that this malthouse was part of a brewery that existed before the larger building known as Le Carbone on South Street, which is not included in this listing. The repeal of the malt tax in 1880 may have encouraged the construction of larger brewery premises.
