Description

The Stags Head Public House, also known as St George Public House, is an inn located on High Street in Portslade. It dates from the late 17th century and has undergone several alterations, including refenestration in the late 19th century and further changes in the late 20th century. The building is faced with coursed pebbles and features a dentil brick cornice, rendered brick quoins and dressings, and a steeply pitched clay tile roof. It has brick stacks at the gable end on the right and between the first and second bays on the left.

Originally, the structure may have been two cottages, later converted into three, and now functions as a single unit. The building has two storeys plus an attic and consists of three bays. There are gabled dormers on the right and at the junction with the adjoining cottage to the left, which is not included in this listing. The first floor has sash windows with one vertical glazing bar, while the ground floor features four window openings with cambered heads, likely inserted in the early 19th century and refenestrated in the late 19th century. The entrances are located in the end bays on the right and left, accessed through late 20th-century doors.

The interior of the ground floor has been altered, but title deeds for the property, believed to date from 1674, are displayed in the saloon bar. The inn was historically connected to the brewery to the east, now known as Le Carbone on South Street, and its predecessor located in Drove Road.
