Description

The remains of a medieval manor house, dating from the 12th century with alterations in the 16th century, are located about 150 meters west of St Mary's Convent. The site is currently obscured by vegetation and was not accessible during the survey. The manor house has fallen into decay over the years and was stripped for materials in the early 19th century, after which it was used as a rubbish tip. The structure is primarily built of random rubble flint pebbles and is represented as an L-plan on the Ordnance Survey map. There are believed to be four sections of wall still standing, including one section incorporated into the boundary wall of St Mary's Convent and another in the north-west corner that stands approximately 6 meters high. A 2-light round-headed window that was previously noted has been removed and is stored safely with Hove Borough Council. Some materials from the medieval manor house can be found in the nearby ruin with grotto adjacent to St Mary's Convent and in the boundary walls of the Church of St Nicolas. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
