Description
Nos. 1-4 St James's Street are terraced houses that have been converted into flats and shops. They were built in the early 19th century, with shop fronts added in the 20th century. The buildings are finished in stucco and feature mansard roofs covered in slate for Nos. 1 and 4, while the roofs of Nos. 2 and 3 are obscured by a blocking course.
The central units, Nos. 2 and 3, are three storeys tall with an attic, while the end units are three storeys high with dormers. Each unit has one window. The terrace is designed as a cohesive composition, with the central units rising higher than the end units. Originally, all party and end walls featured pilasters that extended into the attic and ended in finials shaped like antefixae. Each first floor has a segmental bay with tripartite windows beneath a semi-dome roof. All windows are flat arched, with two windows on the second floor of each unit and in the attic, all having projecting sills.
The party and end walls have giant pilaster strips on the first and second floors, originally designed with recessed vertical panels topped by block capitals decorated with wreaths. The pilasters on No. 2 have been significantly altered, while those between Nos. 3 and 4 are fluted. Each end unit features a balustrade in front of two flat-arched dormers. The first-floor bays of all units, except No. 4, have original sash windows: 9 x 9 for the centre and 6 x 6 for the sides, while No. 3 has 6 x 6 and 3 x 3 windows on the second and attic floors, respectively. An entablature band with a projecting cornice runs continuously over all units. There is evidence of extensive subsidence in No. 2, with the upper floors partially caved-in and sinking; plate and ties have been inserted in the party wall of No. 3. Stacks are located on the party and end walls. The interior has not been inspected.
