Description
The Ray mausoleum, located approximately 5 meters east of the cemetery chapel in Brighton Extra Mural Cemetery, was built around 1850. It is constructed from knapped flint with granite dressings and features an asphalted roof. The mausoleum has a square plan and is partly set into the hillside.
The west entrance is pointed-arched and is set beneath a rectangular hoodmould, with quatrefoils in the spandrels. Above this entrance is a gabled niche that contains a Classical female figure. The two main facades, to the west and south, are divided by buttresses, creating uneven bays on the west side and a more even appearance on the south side. The structure has a high base with an offset that accommodates the entrance.
On the south bay of the west side, there is a trefoiled niche under a pointed-arched hoodmould, which also contains a Classical female figure, with a cross in an octofoil above it. The south side features two trefoiled panels under ogee hoodmoulds; the panel to the west depicts 'Mary at the Sepulchre', while the one to the east shows 'Gethsemane'. The east face includes a similar panel depicting Christ and St Peter. The mausoleum is finished with a cornice and blocking course.
