Description

The Ford Mausoleum, located in Brighton Extra Mural Cemetery, was built for Gerard Ford, who lived from 1830 to 1889. It is situated approximately 90 meters east of the cemetery chapel. The mausoleum is constructed of dressed stone and polished granite, featuring a stone roof and designed in the Gothic style.

The entrance is pointed-arched and includes an elaborately subordered and gabled porch on the east side, with doors made of grey polished granite. The mausoleum has clasping buttresses at all corners. On the north and south sides, there are pairs of round-arched panels supported by engaged columns of pink polished granite, which have foliage capitals and hoodmoulds. The south side features inscriptions. The west end showcases a pointed-arched arcade with six bays, also supported by columns of pink polished granite, and includes a west window with three lights and two transoms, creating the appearance of a columbarium. The roof is covered with stone slabs, although some gable-mouldings are missing. Surrounding the mausoleum are railings made of cast and wrought iron.
