Description

The Brighton and Preston Cemetery entrance lodge, dated 1885 on the chimneystack, is a two-storey building with a basement, designed in the Old English style. It features a rendered exterior with terracotta dressings and a tiled roof. The lodge has gabled wings that face south and east, with a porch situated at the angle between the two wings, and another gabled wing with a catslide roof extending to the north.

The single-storey porch has a hipped roof and a Tudor-arched doorcase made of terracotta, complete with a fanlight and sidelights. Terracotta quoins, which protrude from the render, are present at the angles and window dressings. The south-facing wing includes a canted bay that rises two storeys, featuring flat-arched windows on the ground floor and cusped mouldings on the first floor. The gable above the bay is supported by brackets on terracotta corbels, with timberwork and moulded barge-boards on the gable face.

The east-facing wing has tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, with window heads detailed similarly to those on the south wing. A bressumer is supported by a corbel table, with timberwork and moulded barge-boards on the gable face. The roof features an elaborately moulded multiple stack running north. The lodge is connected to the entrance gates by dwarf walls and railings that match those along Hartington Road. The interior has not been inspected.
