Description
Adelaide Mansions is a terrace of four dwellings built in 1873, now used as a hotel and flats. The buildings are constructed with stucco over brick, and the roof is hidden behind a balustraded parapet. The plan is of a freestanding terrace, with four units, and four storeys plus an attic and basement. Each unit is three bays wide. The attic windows have mixed glazing, while the ground floor has sash windows without glazing bars. French casement windows are found elsewhere. A bracketed cornice runs across the facade, with a moulded string linking the three-window canted bays that rise through three storeys. Third-floor windows have pedimented heads, while second-floor windows have segmental heads. Wrought-iron balconies are present on the second floor, supported by cast-iron columns, and a similar balcony on the first floor is carried on shaped brackets, returning around the roofs of the porches. The ground floor is rusticated, with alternating plain and vermiculated blocks, and features arch-head window openings with keystones and ornamental blind boxes. Flat-roofed Doric porches are located on the outer bays, with a pair in the centre, and are accessed by flights of steps leading to panelled doors with sidelights and fanlights. Cast-iron railings extend from the entrance along the street frontage.
