Description
The shelter located on the seafront at Hove dates from the mid-19th century and was built by Hove Corporation. It was reseated and restored in the late 20th century. The structure is made of painted cast iron and features glazed panels. Its design includes angular U-shaped ends that connect to a central spine. The shelter is a single storey with a flat roof that is concealed behind a parapet, which is decorated with quatrefoil designs and topped with ball finials. A decorative cornice runs along the deep overhanging eaves, which are supported by shaped brackets that spring from cast-iron columns. Dado panels display relief decorations in the form of a ship, which is the symbol of Hove. The mullions between the columns support frosted glass panels, and the benches inside are slated and were added in the late 20th century. This shelter is part of a notable group of seafront shelters.
