Description
This seafront shelter, located in Hove, was built in the mid-19th century by Hove Corporation and underwent reseating and restoration in the late 20th century. It features painted cast-iron construction with glazed panels and has an angular U-shaped plan with ends that connect to a central spine. The shelter is single-storey with a flat roof that is concealed behind a parapet, which is pierced with quatrefoil decoration and topped with ball finials. A decorative cornice runs along the deep overhanging eaves, supported by shaped brackets that spring from cast-iron columns. Dado panels display relief decoration in the form of a ship, which is a symbol of Hove. Between the columns, mullions support frosted glass panels, and the benches, added in the late 20th century, are slated. This shelter is part of a notable group of seafront shelters.
