Description
This is a seafront shelter located on the Western Esplanade in Hove, built in the mid-19th century and later reseated and restored in the late 20th century by Hove Corporation. The shelter is made of painted cast iron and features glazed panels. Its design includes angular U-shaped ends that connect to a central spine. The structure is single-storey with a flat roof that is concealed behind a parapet, which is decorated with quatrefoil designs and topped with ball finials. There is a decorative cornice above deep overhanging eaves, supported by shaped brackets that spring from cast-iron columns. The dado panels display relief decoration in the form of a ship, which is a symbol of Hove. Mullions between the columns hold the frosted glass panels, and there are late 20th-century slatted benches inside. This shelter is part of a group of seafront shelters.
