Description

Numbers 45-58 are a terrace of houses built around 1855 in Brighton. They are constructed of stucco with slate roofs, and are set within a group context of group value.

The houses are three storeys over a half-basement, with some dormers, and have a two-window range. The ground and first floors are decorated with banded rustication. A flat-arched entrance is recessed under a round-arched porch, which has a springing band and archivolts. All windows are flat-arched. A prominent bay extends from the half-basement to the first floor, framed by Doric antae and an entablature. The ground floor section of the bay features a triglyph frieze, while the first-floor section has a pulvinated frieze. Decorative modillion cornices and a balustraded parapet complete the bay. Tripartite windows are present at the front of the bay, with consoles supporting the upper part of the mullions. Cast-iron railings are found on a shallow ground-floor balcony, and a window guard on the first floor. A guilloche storey band runs between the ground and first floors, and a broad moulded storey band is between the first and second floors. The second-floor windows are topped with architraves. The entablature incorporates a pulvinated frieze and a blocking course. Stacks are present on the party walls. Cast-iron railings lead to the steps. Low stuccoed coped walls separate the properties, with a balustraded wall marking the area. Square stuccoed gate piers have upswept cornices.

Individual houses have some variations: Number 45 has reglazed second-floor windows and lacks consoles to the first floor and one gate pier. Number 46’s second-floor windows have been reglazed. Number 47 lacks consoles to the mullions on the first and second floors. Number 48 has no window guard. Number 49 has an original panelled door but lacks first-floor consoles. Number 50 has an original panelled door as well as a dormer. Number 51 has an original panelled door but lacks a window guard and second-floor mullion consoles. Number 52 has reglazed second-floor windows and a dormer in a mansard roof. Numbers 52-54 have reglazed second floor windows and Number 54 lacks first-floor consoles. Number 55 has an original panelled door and lacks second-floor mullion consoles. Number 57 lacks a window guard and first-floor consoles and the second floor has been reglazed. Number 58 has one missing console to a second-floor mullion.

The interior details are not available.

The terrace is considered a distinguished example of 1850s architecture in the Classical tradition.
