Description

Numbers 4-9 and attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1825. They were likely designed by Amon Wilds and CA Busby. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate roofs, except for Number 5, which has a tiled roof.

The houses are three storeys high with a basement and dormers. They each have a two-window range, except for Number 4, which has three windows. A round-arched entrance is present with a fanlight; the fanlight to Number 9 has decorative glazing. Number 4 has a later 20th-century doorcase. Number 6 features a porch with Doric columns and entablature, and Number 8 has a similar porch with engaged columns. All windows are flat-arched. Most houses have segmental bays spanning nearly the full width of the front elevation. Number 6 has a verandah with cast-iron railings and a coved awning, while the remaining houses formerly had balconies, some of which are likely replacements. Number 7 has paterae, a cornice over the first-floor windows, and consoles over the second-floor windows. Numbers 4-7 lack cornices while the cornice for number 8 is simplified. Dormers are present on all houses, with Numbers 8 and 9 featuring mansard roofs. Stacks are located along the party walls.

On Ditchling Road, Number 9 has a prostyle Greek Doric porch with an entablature. To the right is a four-storey segmental bay with tripartite windows. The windows throughout contain sashes of original design. There is an additional flat-arched entrance under a cornice to the right.

The interiors were not inspected. Cast-iron railings are present at the steps and area of Number 9.
