Description

This is a lamp post located in front of number 28 Sussex Square in Brighton. It dates from the mid to late 19th century and was converted to an electric light standard in the early 20th century. The lamp post is made of cast iron and features a fluted, tapering shaft that rises from the pavement to a cylindrical impost block. A single maintenance arm extends from the top of the shaft at a right angle. Above this arm, there is a rectangular circuit box, from which a swan-necked arm with a scroll bracket and shallow dish reflector rises.
