Description

A range of one or two dwellings, likely dating from the 18th century, was later converted into four separate properties. The building is located on the north side of High Street, Portslade, Hove. The front elevation is rendered, with knapped flints visible on the right return. It has a slate roof and overhanging eaves. A brick stack is positioned between the first and second bays on the left side, while a rendered stack sits between the first and second bays on the right. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with a main range fronting the road and an extension attached to number 57. There are two storeys plus an attic. The windows are mostly 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, with an 18-pane sash window on the ground floor at the end bay to the right. A C20 dormer has been inserted into the first bay of number 57. Number 63 has its entrance set back on the right return, with an early 20th-century half-glazed door. Number 61 has a C20 plank door, while number 57 features a C19 canted bay window and a C20 door with a cantilever porch supported by shaped brackets. The interior of the building has not been inspected.

A small, two-storey extension adjoins number 57 to the north, with a clay tiled roof that is hipped to the south, and a crooked stack constructed of flint and brick. This extension has a three-part horizontal sliding sash window. It is possibly a former bakehouse. Sections of walls found abutting the gable end of number 57 suggest that the original property extended further west. A ‘SUN’ firemark is visible on number 57.
