Description

Somerton House is a large house built in the early 18th century, which was re-fronted and extended in the early 19th century. It features painted render, a slate hipped roof, and has a former central staircase plan with three bays that has now been extended to the north and east.

The house stands two storeys tall with attics, showcasing a plinth, cornice, and parapet. It has three flat roof dormers and three chimneys with corniced heads and clay pots. The sash windows, which include glazing bars, are recessed in plain reveals. The entrance front, facing south, has a three-bay window with a slightly projecting section from the early house, featuring a prostyle Doric porch at the centre with a half-glazed door. To the right is a two-bay extension, and to the left is a 20th-century wooden conservatory with six bays and a hipped, glazed roof.

Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase with a wreathed handrail and bobbin balusters. The decorative plaster ceiling above the staircase and landing is enriched with guilloche ornament. The dining room, sitting room, and study each have 18th-century marble chimneypieces. The dining room's chimneypiece features console brackets supporting a moulded cornice, with black marble panels flanking a carved centre panel. The sitting room's chimneypiece has a beaded surround and frieze with paterae corner blocks and a plain mantel shelf. The study's chimneypiece includes a moulded mantel shelf and frieze carved with scroll and floral decoration, supported by two pilasters with female heads.
