Description
Wandle Bank is an early 18th-century building located at 284 London Road in Wallington. It is a two-storey structure made of colourwashed brick, featuring five sash windows. The façade includes angle pilasters, a band at floor level, and a parapet. The central door is topped with a heavy hood supported by brackets, and there are four semi-circular stone steps with moulded nosings leading up to it. The roof is covered with old tiles and has three flat-topped dormers, along with end stacks.
To the right, there is a single-storey addition with a half-hipped tile roof and a 19th-century front, which was possibly added by Arthur Hughes as his studio. The rear elevation has two gabled wings with rendered facing, which may be timber-framed. The property is set in attractive grounds that include two small octagonal pools in front of the house.
Arthur Hughes, the pre-Raphaelite painter, lived in this house until 1891 and retained ownership until his death in 1915. Wandle Bank, along with Nos 282 and 284, forms a group with Wallington Bridge and Manor Cottage on the east side of London Road.
