Description

The rear garden walls to numbers 5 to 27 (odd) on Ashcombe Road originally formed the southern boundary of Carshalton Park. Dating to the early 18th century, a brick pillar at the east end is inscribed with the date 1716. The walls are constructed of red brick with rounded and battered coping stones, a plinth, and brick pilasters at regular intervals. The wall extends eastward, continuing as a south garden wall to number 32 Woodstock Road. To the rear of numbers 5 and 7, two prominent tall brick pillars, capped with stone, mark the boundary; the easternmost pillar bears the date 1716. The wall has been breached to allow for garages behind numbers 11 and 13. A lower section behind number 17 incorporates paler brickwork courses added above the original 18th-century coping, which is likely from the 19th century, and is topped with a square stone-capped pillar. The original wrought-iron gates, flanked by statues of Diana and Actaeon, which were part of the east boundary wall of Carshalton Park, have been relocated to Planting Fields, Oyster Bay, Baltimore, and are now owned by New York University.
