Description

The sewer ventilation column at the junction of Grosvenor Road and Glebe Road was built between 1896 and 1903 by W Macfarlane & Co as part of a sewerage scheme designed by Baldwin Latham. It is one of about 28 remaining in Carshalton.

This cylindrical column stands approximately 9 meters tall and is made of cast iron. It is designed to resemble a Classical column, featuring a pedestal, a moulded base, and an enriched capital. The column consists of two conjoined lengths of pipe connected by a flanged joint. Atop the capital is a ball with vents that originally faced in all four directions, although two of these vents are now missing. Above the ventilator, there is a tall finial, a coronet, and an ornate arrow, which is believed to help orient the vent into the wind or indicate the line of the sewer. While there is no visible manufacturer stamp on this column, several similar examples in Carshalton are marked with the name ‘W MACFARLANE & CO, GLASGOW’.
