Description
The Leoni Bridge is a road bridge built between 1825 and 1828, located on the north retaining wall of the pond to the east of North Street in Carshalton. It is constructed from Portland stone and features ashlar work. The bridge has one segmental arch with an architrave and rusticated abutment piers. A central keyblock with a crest is present, along with a plain parapet that has scroll console overthrows at both ends. On either side of the bridge, there are retaining walls made of brick with Portland stone dressings. At the west end, the embankment wall has been raised with modern stone.
The Leoni Bridge, along with the culvert and retaining walls to Carshalton Ponds, forms a group with several nearby historical sites, including No 1 High Street, the entrance gates to the Grove, Honeywood Museum, Wall and Gatehouse, Anne Boleyn's Well, St Mary's, Madeley Cottage in Church Hill, and items on the south side of the High Street such as the Greyhound Inn, the wall to the east of the Greyhound Inn, the Church of All Saints, the north churchyard wall, and Nos 6 and 12 High Street.
