Description
Michel's Almshouses, located on The Vineyard, were built on the site of a foundation established in 1659. The building is generally two storeys high, constructed of brick with pitched slate roofs at the eaves. It consists of two ranges; the earlier range, built in 1811, has ten units and features a central pediment above a slightly advanced centre, which includes a cartouche with a carved coat of arms above a large stone inscription. The ground floor has arched windows set in recessed arched niches, and the central entrance also has arched sash windows that retain their glazing bars. At right angles to this, there is a later block built in 1858, consisting of six units and designed to be similar in appearance, including the front wall, railings, and entrance gates.
