Description
Bishop Duppa's Almshouses, built in 1850 by Thomas Little, are located on the north-east side of The Vineyard. Originally founded in 1651, they were rebuilt at this site in the Jacobean style using grey brick and stone. The structure consists of five houses on either side of a central archway that leads to a garden at the back. The left side has been mostly restored after sustaining bomb damage. The buildings feature square-headed windows with recessed mullions, with two-light windows on the first floor and three-light windows on the ground floor. There are cornices above both the ground and first floors, and a parapet that conceals the roof. Stone strapwork finials are placed at intervals along the parapet. The central gate is arched with a rusticated head, flanked by applied rusticated Doric half columns, and topped with a pediment on inverted consoles that bears an inscription. The prominent chimneys have sharp angles facing the road.
