Description

The war memorial, designed in 1920 and erected in 1921 by architect H P Burke Downing, features a tall cross on a high plinth. It incorporates a figure of Christ in Majesty and is inscribed with the words 'LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS' and 'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF MERTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR 1914-18', with the addition of 'AND IN THE WAR 1939-45' added later. Burke Downing was a notable local architect known for his arts and crafts style, and this memorial is a strong example of his work, reflecting a severe design. It serves not only as a tribute to the local men who lost their lives but also has exceptional group value with the listed Church of St Mary.
