Description
The Manor House, now part of the John Innes II School, is a substantial detached house built around 1895-1898 and designed by H G Quartermain. It features stock brick with red brick patterning and stone dressings, topped with a tiled pitched roof that extends to the eaves. The main block has five bays and two storeys, with prominent gables at the corners, particularly a large gable on the right. To the left, there is a slightly projecting entrance block that is also gabled and two storeys tall, featuring a Tudor arched entrance and an oriel window above. The windows throughout are square-headed, with one to three lights, and include mullioned and transomed casements, with some plate glass and leaded lights. The second bay from the left in the main block has a canted bay window. The building has an openwork parapet and three gabled bargeboarded dormers with casements and glazing bars. Tall chimneys are present, and the returns are similar in style. A plaque from the Greater London Council commemorates the residence of John Innes, the founder of the John Innes Cultural Institution, who lived from 1829 to 1904. The house is listed mainly for its historic interest.
