Description
Ashford House is a block of houses with shops on the ground floor, built in 1720 and altered and added to in 1907 by Thomson and Pomeroy. The building is constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings and features a parapet, although the roof is not visible. The ground floor has 19th-century shop fronts with plate glass. The structure has three storeys and an irregular seven-bay layout.
On the left side, there is a three-bay section from the 18th century, featuring segmental flush framed, horned, sashed windows with glazing bars. To the right of this is a two-storey canted bay window that extends through the first and second storeys, with 16-paned sashes. Next to it is a late 19th-century linking bay with a round-headed entrance. At the far right, there are two canted two-storey bay windows on the first and second floors. A red brick band runs between the first and second floors, and there is a modillion eaves cornice. The building occupies a prominent corner site.
