Description
This freestanding archway, located about 7 yards northwest of the west doorway of the Church of St Mary, dates from the late 12th century and was erected in 1935. It is made of stone and features an east face with a round-headed archway that has recessed decorated voussoirs and stepped, shafted jambs with scallop capitals, some of which have been renewed. The archway is set within a surround of stone, flint, and tile, topped with a stone slate roof. The west face incorporates other medieval fragments. This archway may have originally been part of the former Hospitium of Merton Priory.
