Description

Abbey Barn and attached Wall and Gateway is a barn built after 1415 for the Bridgittine Nunnery at Syon. It was repaired after the 17th century for the Percys, Earls of Northumberland. The structure features squared and coursed ragstone with gallet-ting at the joints, and a late 17th century brick rear wall. The gabled plain tile roof was constructed after a fire in 1910. The front of the barn, which faces the yard, has a 15th century arched stone doorway to the left but has been significantly altered since the late 17th century, featuring timber lintels and mid to late 18th century segmental brick arches over the central door and 20th century windows with 18th century brick jambs. There are late 17th century brick round-arched architraves to a former full-height doorway on the right, which leads to a through-entry that has a late 19th century rear entry and an angled brick rear wall. Inside, the roof trusses were installed after the 1910 fire. A subsidiary feature extending at right angles from the front at the right-hand corner of the barn, to the right of the through-entry, is a 15th century stone rubble wall with late 17th century brick buttresses flanking a central round-arched gateway made of late 17th century brick, which is chamfered on the outer side and rebated on the inner side, leading to the former farmyard.
