Description
Syon House is a Grade I listed building located on Park Road in Isleworth. It was constructed on the remains of a Brigittine Abbey nunnery, which dates from 1430 to 1470, with parts of the 15th-century undercroft still visible. The house was reconstructed by the Protector Somerset between 1547 and 1552, taking on much of its current form. It is a three-storey structure with a crenellated top and gable turrets, built around a hollow square. The east front features a loggia from the mid-17th century on the ground floor.
The interior and exterior were remodeled by Robert Adam between 1767 and 1775. In 1874, the Percy Lion, originally from Old Northumberland House at Charing Cross, was placed on the river front. The house has suffered slight war damage, with the second floor of the northwest tower being rebuilt and two statues on columns in the anteroom destroyed.
Syon House has historical associations with notable figures, including Catherine Howard, the Protector Somerset, John, Duke of Northumberland, Lady Jane Grey, the nuns recalled from the Netherlands, Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, and the children of Charles I, as well as Charles II during the plague of 1665. The Dukes of Northumberland, who have held the estate since 1766, are also linked to its history. Syon House and its lodges form a significant group of Grade I listed buildings.
