Description

Syon House Conservatory was built around 1830, designed by architect Charles Fowler and head gardener Richard Forrest for the Duke of Northumberland. The structure features a central parabolic dome and quadrant wings, with a pedimented front in the center and pedimented ends on the wings. It is faced with Bath stone, while the majority of the building is made of glass supported by a cast iron frame with columns. Although the interior has been altered, it still retains original details, including "Tower of the Winds" capitals. This conservatory is noted as "the first metallic horticultural structure of any importance" according to Edward Walford in 'Greater London'. References to the conservatory can be found in "Gardener's Magazine" and "Architectural Magazine", as well as in "History and Antiquities of Syon Monastery" published in 1840. A drawing of the Syon Conservatory was exhibited by Fowler at the Royal Academy in 1849.
