Description

The Whistler Memorial is a chest tomb located adjacent to the south side of Powell's Walk, approximately 120 meters west of the Church of St Nicholas. Designed by E W Godwin, it commemorates the artist James McNeil Whistler, who died in 1903, and his wife Beatrix, who died in 1896. The memorial features a bronze chest tomb set on a stone ashlar pedestal. It has a central inscription panel flanked by pairs of fluted Ionic pilasters, which are decorated with festoons of husks. Originally, each cornice had a gilt bronze angel, but these have been stolen. The frieze displays bayleaf festoons beneath an Ionic cornice, and similar Ionic pilasters flank a laurel wreath on each end panel.
