Description
The Tomb of Sir William Blake Richmond is a memorial stone located in Chiswick House, commemorating the artist who lived from 1842 to 1921. Designed by Margaret Wrightson, it features a Portland stone plinth that supports a white marble panel. The tomb is rectangular with a pedimented top, adorned with acanthus kneelers and a finial.
On the east side, there is a dedication to Sir William's wife, Clara, who passed away in 1915. This side includes a relief carving of a woman representing Charity, dressed in flowing drapes, holding a heart-topped staff and the hand of a kneeling mourner, with doves in the background and the inscription "CARITAS."
The west side is dedicated to Sir William himself, featuring a relief carving of a woman in flowing drapes representing Hope, stepping from a boat onto water while holding a sail inscribed "SPES." Below this carving is a quotation from the Iliad.
