BURLINGTON LANE W4 1. 4419 Convent of St Mary and Hospital of St Joseph TQ 27 NW 46/1 II

  1. Convent and hospital. Circa 1895. Free Style. Red brick, stone dressings, green graduated slates to pitched roofs. Complex plan. Most elaborate ranges to Burlington Road. Chapel range parallel to Burlington Road, with advanced gabled chapel to left, low spired tower rising through roof to centre, and advanced gabled crossrange to right, containing main entrance. Adjoining ranges to rear. 1 - 2 storeys. Entrance wing four windows wide to road, with square headed entrance set within segmented arched reveal, crucifix to tympanum, and decorative leaf carving to rich string course above; prominent carved gutter spouts; round topped gable. Single storey centre range. Tower with copperspire and weather vane behind crenellated parapet and carved gutter spouts. Chapel to left with crenellated parapet and three light perpendicular traceried window to gabled projecture. Other windows square headed, timber with small panes and glazing bars. East end of chapel with entrance, and crucifix within segmental arched reveal with carved string course. Clerestory windows to south only, timber with perpendicular tracery. Rear wings simpler in detail. Interiors not inspected, but it is understood that much original detail survives.
