Description
The Convent of St Mary and Hospital of St Joseph, built around 1895, is a free-style building located on Burlington Lane. It features red brick with stone dressings and green graduated slates on its pitched roofs. The complex plan includes the most elaborate sections facing Burlington Road. The chapel range runs parallel to the road and has an advanced gabled chapel on the left, a low spired tower rising through the roof at the center, and an advanced gabled cross range on the right that contains the main entrance. The building is 1 to 2 storeys high, with the entrance wing being four windows wide. It has a square-headed entrance set within a segmented arched reveal, a crucifix in the tympanum, and decorative leaf carving on a rich string course above. There are prominent carved gutter spouts and a round-topped gable. The single-storey center range features a tower with a copper spire and weather vane behind a crenellated parapet, along with carved gutter spouts. The chapel on the left has a crenellated parapet and a three-light perpendicular traceried window in its gabled projection. Other windows are square-headed, made of timber with small panes and glazing bars. The east end of the chapel includes an entrance with a crucifix in a segmental arched reveal and a carved string course. Clerestory windows are present only on the south side, also timber with perpendicular tracery. The simpler rear wings have less detailed architecture. Although the interiors were not inspected, it is understood that much of the original detail remains intact.
