Description

Inigo Jones's Gateway in Chiswick Park is a significant architectural feature dating from 1621. Originally removed from Beaufort House in Chelsea in 1738, the gateway is constructed of brick with a cement render and features stone dressings. It has a round-headed arch with a keystone and vermiculated rustication. The arch is flanked by Roman Doric columns that support an entablature and pediment. The 18th-century side walls are topped with broad stone cappings and ball-terminals, and they bear inscriptions that read "Builded by Inigo Jones at Chelsea 1621" and "Given by Sir Hans Sloane, Baronet to the Earl of Burlington 1738". The gateway is completed with wrought iron gates. This structure is part of a group that includes Chiswick House, its garden buildings, and ornaments.
