Description

The Church of St Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1864, attributed to architect Henry Clutton. The church features plum-red brick, matching the adjacent convent, and has a steep tiled roof. It includes plate tracery and rose windows at the east end (ritual west) and in the north transept, along with three lancet windows at the choir end. The north side faces Richmond Road, while the east end looks onto Crescent Road, and the south side is adjacent to the convent. The north aisle and clerestorey are adorned with lancet windows. A projecting porch with double arches on colonettes leads to a belfry topped with a miniature spire on the north side, alongside a modern single-storey extension. The interior is very plain. St Mary's Roman Catholic Church and No 39 are part of a group with Our Lady of Sion Convent and the wall extending south along Crescent Road.
