Description

787/0/10157 TWICKENHAM ROAD 29-NOV-02 Entrance gate and front wall of Gumley House

GV II

Pair of gate piers with wrought iron gates, flanked by stretches of front wall to either side. Early 18th century. Brown brick with red brick dressings, Portland stone bases, moulded caps and ball finials to piers, coping to walls. On either pier is a marble inscription panel, reading GUMLEY HOUSE. The two leaves of the gate have arrow-headed dogbars and a scrolled overthrow. The walls on either side of the gates, of Flemish bond, have three pilasters of red brick, breaking forward from the wall surface; beyond these, the walls are plainer. That to the south of the gates has been rebuilt (possibly as a result of bomb damage) at a point just level with the south of the house; that to the north continues for a longer length and consists of several phases, with plainer square piers capped with Portland stone copings.
